Rules of Engagement
Rules of Engagement
The Rules of Engagement include six areas of behavior:
o Basic Courtesies
o Operating Agreement
o Problem Solving and Decision Making
o Accountability
o Conflict Resolution
o Leader's Role
- In a meeting, discuss what areas of behavior will best support the team's productivity and effectiveness
- Allow time for discussion of the key areas of behaviors the team wants to adopt
- Make sure everyone's voice is heard
- Once the group decides on the key areas of behavior, post the completed Rules of Engagement at every meeting (at least initially) as a reminder to the group
- Hold each member accountable for adhering to the Rules of Engagement
- Periodically revisit the Rules of Engagement; how frequently you do this depends upon the duration and size of your team and whether new team members join the group
- As team leader, you must play two roles: You are the Facilitator as well as a team member-in other words, you must give your teammates permission to call you when you don't honor the team's Rules of Engagement-no one is perfect
- Be sure everyone is included in your Rules of Engagement exercise, including your virtual team members
- Never distort others views in order to advance your own
- Thank your teammates for their participation and contribution
